This
is a long and faithful
adaptation of the book. The acting from the lead, Anne Firbank is
excellent, although she was, perhaps a little too old to be playing
Anne. The supporting cast are good, although the actress playing Louisa
over does her giggling and Captain Benick does not come across as very
convincing.
Brian Marshall is a believable
Captain Wentworth, but could be a little more dashing. The length of
the production does make some scenes and dialogue over long and the
contrast in lights between the internal and the external shots is very
noticeable.
Anne's choice of clothes also
borders on the bizarre, where did they find that green check dress? I
don't think they had nylon in the 1800s!
All that aside, it is still an
excellent production considering that it was made in 1971. The final
scenes where Anne and Captain Wentworth are reunited and wander around
the streets of Bath are particularly well done.
A must for all Jane Austen
romantics!
