A
beautiful adaptation of a
wonderful novel. An
excellent cast and skilful filming make this a very realistic
film. The story never drags, its short length does cut out
dialogue from the book but this does not detract from the
essential story.
The Lyme scenes are wonderfully
effective,
although I am not convinced Captain Harville would have lived in
such a run down House as the one portrayed in this production.
The cottages used in the 1971 production are certainly those
opposite the "pier of unknown date" mentioned by Jane
in her novel. So we should defer on this point to the accuracy of
the 1971 production.
Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds are
excellent as
the leads and the momentum holds up until the end. I am not sure
that it was wise to put words in Sir Walter's mouth which were
not those of Jane Austen at the very end of the film, and Captain
Wentworth's obvious repost to these words does not happen, so it
is a slight anti-climax at the end.
Over all the acting and the
filming of this
great book make this a very enjoyable film to watch.
